All things being equal

At the moment, our core development team in Pixelati consists of an artist, a programmer and a writer/producer. We all contribute to the game design and we’re all cross-disciplinary to some degree – you have to be, these days.

Pixelati has a non-hierarchical structure. That doesn’t mean we’re all action and no direction. “Non-hierarchical” means we don’t have managers but we do have Leaders.

Leaders rise organically from the group. Because we cultivate a culture of respect without egos, everyone’s ideas are heard and when we hear a good one, we push it to the top.

I’m not gonna pretend it’s plain sailing, or that it’s not going to get a lot harder as we grow, but it works for us and so far it’s worked well. We put that down to the fact that our non-hierarchical structure has roots in values that preclude the problematic areas that often arise in organisations like ours – specifically, that our purported values manifest not only in our organisational structure but also in our financial.

And there’s plenty more to say on that : ).

  1. Values are grossly under-rated as a valid means of establishing a foundation for an organisational structure. Good on you for giving it a go!
    Couple of thoughts inspired by your post:
    Are the use of the words ‘hierarchy’ and ‘structure’ appropriate if you’re trying to break the mold? Or are semantics unimportant?
    If this is ‘how you roll’ what impact would that have on recruitment? And how does that fit with employment law?
    What are your thoughts on evolving hierarchies? i.e New people automatically place themselves under the ‘originals’? Does recruitment therefore undermine your entire system?
    Love the idea!!! Want… more… depth… please… :)

    • Hey thanks – yup, it’s an interesting and difficult road to travel – and we’re definitely a loooong way from proving anything yet but we have a plan and we have a team of good people so we’ll see how we go!

  2. Also just wanted to say that we’ve put a lot of thought into the recruitment process. As I’ve said in the article, we’re a long way from “nailing” anything and I’m sure we’ll find a lot of improvements that need to be made but I feel that if we have truly “bought in” to our core values then our approach will naturally arise and evolve from that point as we take on the realities of putting the pedal to the metal : ).
